The Plaza District hosted its own version of Small Business Saturday.Businesses across 16th Street opened to all who braved the rain to shop. They said it was a great way to boost the local economy.Though it rained Saturday, shops told KOCO 5 it didn’t stop people from coming out. Shoppers said they wanted to be a part of supporting local artists and store owners.Small Business Saturday is national but the Plaza District calls its event “Shop Small Saturday.” Shoppers said it’s the place to find unique items that fit your needs.”Products that are usually, pretty much always, better made, which is good for your wallet, good for the environment, good for the artists,” said Emogene Cronnell, a shopper.Oklahoma City residents who work at the shops said the rain didn’t stop people from spending money at local stores.”It’s really great, despite the fact that it’s raining and cold and not the most ideal weather. But we’ve seen a lot of turnout today and we really appreciate it,” said Kylie Trail, Out On A Limb employee.Shoppers said the day is perfect for the time of year.”Especially with it being so close to the holidays, it’s really good to attract more people to the area,” said Gabi Glidewell, a shopper.Stores in the Plaza District said the day is important for them and they love seeing locals in their stores and not the big chains.”Instead of on Amazon or at Walmart or something, because all the money’s going to someone who owns that small business. It’s not some multi-million, billion-dollar company. It’s just a mom with her kid, it’s helping her out,” Trail said.The Independent Shoppers Association called on customers in OKC to celebrate Small Business Sunday after Saturday’s rain. The Plaza District has plans to continue its event Sunday.
